Cambridge ACS, in collaboration with The Cambridge Union , are thrilled to bring you The Motherland Conference 2018.

Africa is one of the most exciting landscapes in the modern world. Constantly adapting to meet the needs of it's youthful population whilst battling to conserve it's identity and find it's place on the global stage.

Join us as we delve into reimagining the story of this fascinating continent and explore how members of the diaspora can contribute to the narrative. Learn from Key note speakers at the forefront of Governance, Business and Culture and enjoy the chance to share your own ideas during our interactive panel discussions.

Together we will forge a vision for a new motherland.

Layout

The conference will be focussed on the key areas of Business and Industry, Governance, and Culture. Through intimate panel discussions featuring the very best of the continent, we will encourage students to collectively forge a vision for a new Motherland. In the evening, to top it off, we will reimagine the idea of Cambridge’s black-tie traditions.

Gbenga Oyebode
Mr Gbenga Oyebode MFR

Gbenga Oyebode MFR is the Chairman of Aluko & Oyebode, (Barristers, Solicitors & Trademark Agents), one of the largest integrated law firms in Nigeria, with offices in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt. Gbenga was on the cover of Forbes Africa July 2018 and was Chairman of Access Bank Plc (2005-2015). He is the Chairman of Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc and CFAO Nigeria Plc and serves on the Boards of MTN Nigeria Limited, Nestle Nigeria Plc and Socfinaf S.A (listed on the Luxemburg Stock Exchange). He sits on the Africa Advisory Committee of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and is a Member of the Board of Trustees of Carnegie Hall, New York. Gbenga is the past Chairman of the Section of Business Law of the Nigerian Bar Association. Gbenga was conferred with one of Nigeria’s highest honours, the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and was also conferred with the Belgian Royal Honour of ‘Knight of the Order of Leopold’. Gbenga was educated at the University of Ife (LL.B Honours), and the University of Pennsylvania (LL.M). He was conferred Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa), by the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti and Elizade University, Ilara Mokin, Ondo State, Nigeria. He is the Chancellor of Elizade University, Ilara Mokin, Ondo State, Nigeria. He was conferred with an award for Lifetime Contribution to Law at the Law Digest Africa Awards 2015.

Adesua Dozie

Adesua Dozie is the General Counsel, GE Africa. As General Counsel, Mrs Dozie acts as the chief legal officer for a company with over 2600 employees, revenues of about $3.3 billion dollars and operations in 33 African countries. She is also a strong advocate of women in business and economic empowerment in Africa.
Adesua has an LL.B from the University of Buckingham and an LL.M from Cornell Law school and is admitted practice law in New York and Nigeria. Previously, she was Senior Operations Counsel and Marketing, Customer and Commercial Counsel for The Coca-Cola Company Eurasia Africa Group. Prior to this, Mrs Dozie was a lawyer at Ajumogobia & Okeke, a prominent Nigerian law firm.

Ozwald Boateng has had a transformational impact on menswear fashion for almost three decades, with a design aesthetic rooted in Savile Row tradition but defined by international style, detail, and artistry. He sees himself as both tailor and a designer and in being so, coined the term ‘bespoke couturier. His instinctive use of colour, cut and fabric fuses traditional classic British tailoring with a high-end modern design focus on the refinement of a man’s silhouette and enhancing the experience for the wearer, bringing tailoring to a whole new generation of men.
Born in London to Ghanaian parents Ozwald Boateng has been a prominent figure on the international menswear scene, entirely self taught he began tailoring at the age of 16. His skills led him to set up a design studio on London’s famous Portobello Road, in his early twenties. It was from here that his reputation as a unique British tailor grew. Ozwald Boateng’s unique approach to tailoring and design has coveted the attention of some of the world’s famous men, with a client list that ranges from business leaders to Heads of State, Royalty and celebrated figures from music, film and entertainment. He has designed and created wardrobe pieces for some of the most iconic television shows and block buster movies the most recent being Marvel’s epic Black Panther.

Nelson Chamisa

Nelson Chamisa is a Zimbabwean politician and church pastor, current MDC Alliance President and former member of the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe for Kuwadzana, Harare. Chamisa was the MDC Alliance's candidate for president in the 2018 general election. He is now recognised as the Leader of the Opposition in Zimbabwe and continues to contest the election outcome.
Nelson Chamisa was elected the Secretary General of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) in 1998. Nelson Chamisa, together with his colleges transformed the administration and politics of student activism by setting up union offices across the whole country and radicalising approach of student representation. He was the former national youth chairperson for the MDC. In 2003, Nelson Chamisa became the youngest member of parliament at the age of 25, breaking new ground in Zimbabwean politics. He also ventured into uncharted territories by becoming the youngest Minister at the inception of the inclusive government in 2009, as the Minister of ICT, and was voted Minister of the year in 2011.

Kola Karim is the Group Managing Director/CEO Shoreline Energy International Ltd, a leading energy and infrastructure company focused on Africa. His current portfolio consists of business in the construction, commodity trading, agro-allied products, oil and gas, engineering and power sectors. In addition to his role at Shoreline Energy International, Mr. Karim is the current Chairman of Costain West Africa Plc and Nigerian Ropes Plc and serves as director in eight companies including Shoreline Power Ltd, Schlumberger Testing & Production Services Nigeria Limited, Trans Amadi Facilities Ltd. He is an Africa Advisory board member of the London Stock Exchange and the Advisory board member of the Centre for African Studies at Harvard University. Mr. Karim is a Young Global Leader 2008 Award Honoree and also a pioneer and active member of the Global Agenda Council on Emerging Multinationals of the World Economic Forum.

Dr Othman Cole

Moderator

Dr Othman Cole is the moderator for our Business Panel. He is a Senior Faculty in Management Practice (Finance) and the Deputy Director of the Executive MBA Programme at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. He is also a Fellow of Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge. Dr Cole holds a PhD and an MPhil in Finance, both from Cambridge Judge Business School; an MSc in International Securities, Investment and Banking; and an MEng in Computer Systems Engineering.
Prior to his current role, Dr Cole was a Research Associate and then Fellow at Cambridge Judge Business School. He was also an Assistant Professor of Finance at ESCP Europe Business School, where he is now an Affiliate Professor. Othman's areas of teaching are in the areas of corporate finance, project finance, mergers & acquisitions, and his areas of research are in the areas of capital structure of companies, behavioural biases, National Oil Companies (NOCs) and International Oil Companies (IOCs), carbon emissions and economic growth.
Othman has published a number of peer-reviewed academic articles and book chapters, and has presented papers at a number of international conferences. Othman's previous experiences were in investment banking during his roles at Barclays Capital and DNA Project Finance. He has also consulted for a number of companies in risk management, real estate, and energy
